Lungo

A lungo is a longer, milder variation of an espresso. Made by forcing more hot water through the coffee grounds, a lungo shot has a more subtle bitterness and a higher volume than a standard espresso. It’s perfect for those who enjoy the richness of espresso but want a slower, smoother sipping experience. Whether you’re exploring the difference in espresso vs lungo, or wondering what is caffe lungo, this recipe will guide you through a perfect brew at home.

Directions

1. Use your espresso machine or a compatible device like the Artkoff EM625.
2. Fill the portafilter with 0.7 oz of coffee and tamp evenly.
3. Select the “Lungo” setting (if available) or let the hot water run for around 45–60 seconds to extract 90 ml.
4. Observe the color change: it should start rich and become lighter — this is key to a proper espresso lungo.
5. Serve hot. Add sugar or milk to taste, though many prefer it black to enjoy the full aroma.
6. Pair with a croissant or biscotti for a classic Italian-style break.

Tip

The word lungo means “long” in Italian — referring not only to the volume of water but also to the prolonged extraction time. Compared to a ristretto shot, a lungo coffee contains more caffeine and water, making it less intense but more voluminous.
